Description:
From seed gathered at high altitude in 2007 on northern Vietnam's second highest peak close to Fansipan at 2700m. Where this evergreen ancient forest species only formed small trees 6-7m tall (more shrub-like in gardens) with leathery dark green glossy thick-textured leaves pale on their undersides, to 18cm long. Bearing star-shaped 9-petalled white flowers to 15 cm across May-June in the wild, followed by long spikes bearing seed capsules splitting to reveal the red-orange aril covered seed. Best grown in sun to light shade in a freely draining soil with good moisture retention out of freezing winds. Syn. Alcimandra.
