Description: After eight trips to Japan we finally found this species in seed where it was abundant once we tapped into the rich seam of wild populations of this vertically challenged yellow flowering species running through Shikoku. A compact species only 5-10cm tall, forming foliage in rosettes that are pressed onto the ground that are grey wonderfully dark mottled. The upward facing pale yellow lightly red spotted flowers are borne just above the leaves August-October. For a moist leafy well drained soil in full-part shade protect from excessive winter wet. Although we have grown plants labelled as this species from cultivation in Japan these do differ considerably.
