Description: From one of our collections from the Hiroshima area of southern Honshu, Japan in the autumn of 2006. An elegant shrub with dark sometimes ageing black upright stems bearing obovate silky-haired leaves to 12cm long. Close to the ends of the branches before the new foliage emerges in spring, a mass of small yellow flowers are borne with the flowering stalks (pedicells) elongating over the summer to 2.2cm, bearing small round glossy red soon turning black fruit on female plants, well into the autumn which contrast with the bright yellows of the foliage. Best grown in sun to part shade in a freely drained acid-neutral soil with some moisture retention.
