Magnolia hypoleuca - BSWJ10821

Pot Size: 5 litre
Price: £50.00
Description:
We were only able to reach a few of the large purple-pink seed-heads with bristly tips of this collection, luckily the capsules were splitting making it easier to extract the orange aril covered seed. The parent trees were old and large as we were in the ancient forests of Iwate in the north of Honshu, Japan in 2005, one of the cold mountainous areas they inhabit. They bore large paddle-shaped leaves to 50cm long, glaucous below held on stout branches. The large scented white cup-shaped upright flowers 20cm across, with contrasting central ring of red stamen were borne in May to June. Best grown out of strong winds in a drained fertile acid to neutral soil.
