With grass-like thick-textured upright evergreen 9-11 veined leaves 8-20mm wide to 65cm tall, but normally nearer half of that. Bearing upright terminal spikes of bright purple-lilac flowers in summer which are followed by blackish fruits. From one of our collections gathered from the Kochi area of Shikoku Island, Japan in 2006. Commonly used as an edging in gardens especially in the Far East, as it is easily grown in either sun or shade in any type of drained fertile soil.
