Description:
A purple flowered selection one of many collections we made of a colourful but very variable species (confusing as there is S. formosus & formosoides from this area) varying from white through all the shades of pink to purple. Known locally as arnica they are a tufted perennial from fleshy roots with flexuous but upwardly inclined branching stems to 1.2m, with clasping narrow undulating margined leaves and terminal funnel-shaped ray-flowers of a considerable size. A seed collections made in 2004 on Volcán Ruiz in the Colombian Paramo at 4260m.
