Veratrum maackii v. japonicum

A variety that is endemic to mountain forests of northern Japan, bearing stems to 1m tall. With few narrowly oblong broadly lanceolate leaves with elevated nerves, to 40cm long by up to 6cm wide, which narrow to a stalk at the base. With numerous, purple-brown spreading flowers to 1.5cm across, in terminal panicles July-September. Easily grown in light to part shade in a cool spot in a well drained soil with a little moisture retention.
