Description:
My personal ultimate passion fruit, which is rarely available in the UK, known as Sweet Granadilla. This is from a wild collection that we found growing on a high altitude pass at almost 3,000m on our way to Ibague from Armenia, in Central Colombia in February 2024. Here it had formed a large tendril climber, with luxurious glossy dark green almost round heart-shaped leaves, trailing up the roadside trees, to 5m tall. Hiding the large tennis-ball sized still green fruit when we discovered it, which had succeeded the sizeable white and purple passion flowers, later ripening to my familiar orange-yellow sweet and juicy favourite fruit. Best attempted under protection, as they are not frost hardy as the normal blue passion flower Passiflora caerulea is.
