It was a pleasant surprise to find this species so heavily laden with fruit when we came across it in the mountains of Miyazaki on the island of Kyushu Japan in the autumn of 2006. An exquisite deciduous shrub which smothers the bare branches in a mass of small yellow unisexual flowers in spring. The foliage is elegant thin textured elliptic to narrowly ovate, a bright green all summer transforming to one of the best autumnal deep-yellows available bearing large green rounded fruits on the female plants.
