Description: An evergreen ancient forest species which forms impressive trees with leathery dark green glossy thick-textured leaves pale on their undersides, to 18cm long. Bearing star-shaped 9-petalled white flowers to 15 cm across May-June in the wild, followed by long spikes bearing seed capsules splitting to reveal the red-orange aril covered seed. From seed gathered from the ground below a 30 m tall tree in the high altitude forest of Fansipan in the winter of 2006. Best grown in sun to light shade in a freely draining soil with good moisture retention out of freezing winds. Syn. Alcimandra.
