With lanceolate to narrowly elliptic spotted leaves 20-30 cm long and only 3-6 cm wide, on short petioles. Arising from strong creeping densely scaly branched rhizomes, forming dense colonies. Bearing purple campanulate flowers with up to 8 lobes directly from its thick rhizomes, usually just protruding above the surface of the soil/compost opening from June to July in the wild. Easily grown in a container or in a sheltered spot in the garden, in full shade where the soil cannot waterlog.
