Ruscus streptophyllus - BSWJ15100

Pot Size: 3 litre
Price: £45.00
Description:
A monocot with broadly elliptic to ovate leaf-like cladodes (flattened stems), that are twisted at their bases, hence the inflorescence which is positioned in the middle of the upper surface, hangs below in its normal form. With arching stems to 60cm long, that grow almost horizontal to the ground. Bearing winter flowers with reflexed perianth segments, followed by plump red fruit on female plants if pollinated, several months later. A rare evergreen rhizomatous sub-shrub, that is a monoecious species, which has a tiny distribution in the wild, confined to the island of Madeira, where we collected the seed from the high altitude Laurus forest at 890m in the winter of 2017. Best grown in shade, sheltered from hard frosts in a well drained organic soil.
