Description: A rare and endangered species, forming sizeable trees in time with large compound palmate leaves comprised of 5-9 oblanceolate-obovate pointed leaflets on very short stalks. Bearing elongated panicles (to 45cm base) of scented white, yellow eyed flowers in spring followed by large encased seed to 10cm across. From the exceptionally large seed (conkers) Peter Wharton and I collected from a large tree 25-30m tall, situated in dense mountain forest in northern Vietnam in the autumn of 2007. As the seed is prone to drying it was immediately sown in the open ground on its arrival, where it started to germinate in January.
