Description: Generally speaking members of this family are not hardy in British cultivation, although we have found a couple, this being one of them. A confirmed woodlander, which normally forms a prostrate creeping mat, but occasionally to 15 cm tall, of tiny pale green heart-shaped leaves with undulating margins, affording it a delicate impression. Studded with relatively large broad propeller-like 4-petalled flowers for months, over the growing season. Usually found in well shaded moist mountain forests in Taiwan, this collection was from Taipingshan, in the north at a cold 2,000m. Probably best in an acid to neutral soil, but worth attempting in a wider range, in a soil that does not dry out.
